1963: Release COME ON / I WANT TO BE LOVED in the UK, the Stones’ first single ever (Decca F11675)

1968: Release of JOHN MAYALL’S BLUESBREAKERS’ 7″ single NO REPLY / SHE’S TOO YOUNG, with Mick Taylor in the band (Decca F 12792)

1970: Charlie does the photo shoot for the cover of the Stones’ next live album GET YER YA-YA’S OUT! Although the two photography sessions for the cover featuring Charlie and a donkey are depicted in the documentary film Gimme Shelter, showing Watts and Mick on a section of the M6 motorway adjacent to Bescot Rail Depot in Birmingham, England, posing with a donkey, the actual cover photo was taken in early February 1970 in London, and does not originate from the 1969 session. Legendary photographer David Bailey took care of the photoshoot, featuring Charlie with guitars and bass drums hanging from the neck of a donkey, inspired by a line in Bob Dylan’s song ‘Visions of Johanna’ (“Jewels and binoculars hang from the head of the mule”). The band would later say “we originally wanted an elephant but settled for a donkey”

June 7-July 5, 1971: The Stones start early sessions for Exile on Main Street at the basement of Nellcote, Keith Richards’ villa in Villefranche-sur-mer, using the Rolling Stones Mobile Unit
Keith, about setting up for Exile: “Recording at my place was a necessity. The idea was to find another place to record like a farmhouse in the hills. But they couldn’t find anywhere, so eventually they turned around and looked at me. I looked at Anita and said, Hey, babe, we’re gonna have to handle it. Anita had to organize dinner sometimes for something like 18 people. We redid the basement kitchen into the studio.”
