From Songfacts: Recorded during the Emotional Rescue sessions, this is one of two songs for which Ron Wood gets a credit on Tattoo You. The other one is “Black Limousine.”
This features Nicky Hopkins on piano. He went on to play with artists as varied as Meat Loaf, Julio Iglesias, Belinda Carlisle, Paul McCartney, Graham Parker and Izzy Stradlin. He died of a stomach ailment and heart condition in 1994.
From the The Rolling Stones – All the Songs book: “No Use in Crying” is one of the tracks laid down during the second phase of recording for Emotional Rescue, which extended from the end of June to the beginning of August 1979. Once again, Ron Wood is credited as cowriter, along with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. This song is the story of a relationship that has just ended. A young woman abandoned by her lover hopes against hope that he will come back. She sees his face everywhere, but it’s not real. There is no point in weeping; he is not coming back. The refrain speaks volumes: It’s not me, stay away from me. This is a subject borrowed directly from the originators of the blues. “No Use in Crying” has never been performed live by the Rolling Stones.
