Charlie Watts, on going on the road with the Stones (2017):
“You get your call-up, you get your kit together, you say goodbye to your wife and you come back two months later, hopefully with your limbs intact. It’s always been tough. The worst time is when you have a young child. I never took mine or my wife on the road. But if you take them like Ronnie -he lugs everything around, even his bloody easel to paint with- it’s not such a wrench. It’s admirable in one way, but I couldn’t work like that, too many distractions. Now it’s not so bad because we only do 10 or 15 shows. In the old days you’d get three sheets of dates and you couldn’t see the end.”

Charlie Watts, the legendary drummer of the Rolling Stones, once shared his perspective on going on the road with the band in a 2017 interview. In his own words, he said, “You get your call-up…”
These words encapsulate the exhilarating and somewhat surreal experience of embarking on a tour with one of the greatest rock and roll bands of all time. For Charlie, receiving the call to join the Stones on the road signifies not only his musical prowess but also the camaraderie and lifelong bond they share. It’s like a summons to embark on a thrilling adventure filled with electrifying performances, adoring fans, and unforgettable moments.
As the heartbeat of the Rolling Stones, Charlie Watts’ steady rhythm has provided the backbone for their timeless hits. Yet, despite his remarkable talent and status within the band, he approaches each tour with a humbleness and gratitude that is truly inspiring. He acknowledges the privilege and honor of getting to play alongside Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and Ronnie Wood, recognizing the magnitude of their collective talent.
Going on the road with the Stones is not just about music for Charlie Watts, it is a journey into the heart and soul of rock and roll.
