A BIT OF HISTORY: ‘THROUGH THE PAST, DARKLY (BIG HITS VOL. 2)’ ALBUM COVER

The cover was an unusual octagonal shape, with the band pictures, full face with long hair. The shape was inspired by an M.C. Escher artwork called Verbum. Indeed Mick wrote to Escher requesting him to do the artwork for an album, but he declined. Andy Warhol was also approached but they settled for the octagonal design on this occasion, Andy later agreeing to do the Sticky Fingers artwork. Mott the Hoople also used an Escher design, Reptiles, for their 1969 debut album.
