Recorded by Larry Williams in August 1958 as the B-side of his single “Bad Boy.” It was written by Sonny Bono and Roddy Jackson. Bono, who had started his career as a songwriter at Specialty Records before joining Phil Spector’s team, is best known as half of the Sonny and Cher duo, of “I Got You Babe” and “The Beat Goes On” fame, formed in 1964. Roddy Jackson was a rockabilly singer and songwriter who signed with Specialty at Sonny Bono’s instigation.
It may not have achieved success in the US charts, but “She Said ‘Yeah’” made a mark on British groups of the early sixties, as did various other Larry Williams numbers. The Rolling Stones recorded the song on either September 5 or 6, 1965. Based on the song’s communicative energy, it is tempting to consider the Stones’ version of “She Said ‘Yeah’” as one of the first ever examples of hard or even punk rock (a dozen or so years before the term was coined)
