Although recorded during the Voodoo Lounge sessions, “Brand New Car” could have been cut at any point during the Stones’ career. Like a new “Terraplane Blues” (Robert Johnson) or “Me and My Chauffeur Blues” (Memphis Minnie), the song effectively reaffirms the link between the London band and the blues. As befits a bluesman with a great deal of experience under his belt, Mick Jagger carves out a number of well-chosen metaphors. He clearly wants us to see this brand-new automobile as resembling a woman who is slinky like a panther, who can be heard purring, and who is like fur to the touch. This beast of a song has since roared into life onstage during the 1994–1995, 1999, and 2002 tours.
