Another heartache. Through the lonely nights I think of you/Through the
lonely hours I dream of you. There seems to be no hope for this lover who
finds it difficult to be separated from the woman he loves. He does not want
to crack, however, or to give in to tears. “Through the Lonely Nights” goes
back to the Goats Head Soup sessions, most probably those held at
Dynamic Sounds Studios in Kingston in November and December 1972.
This ballad with its predominantly acoustic sound was eventually left off
the track listing for the album, but was chosen as the B-side of the single
“It’s Only Rock ’n’ Roll,” released on July 26, 1974. It was included on
Rarities 1971–2003, and again in the box set The Singles Collection 1971–
For many years, rumors have been circulating that Jimmy Page plays
on the recording of “Through the Lonely Nights.” These rumors are
based mainly on the fact that Keith Harwood (then the sound engineer
for Led Zeppelin) was in attendance at the overdub sessions at Island
Studios. More fantasy than fact, it would seem…
