From the The Rolling Stones – All the Songs book:
The Rolling Stones raise the curtain on a sadomasochistic stage. Feel the prickles running up and down your back: here we are dealing with the pain of love… And the picture is all the more sexy for being dark and morally taboo. The old maid is rouging up, applying final touches. Even though she’s late for the dance, I tell you tonight she’s really gonna have a ball, she’s gonna really tie me up: “Tie You Up (The Pain of Love)” or Mick Jagger ready for the supreme sacrifice… Is it possible to see the shadow of
Marianne Faithfull, the great-great-niece of the writer Leopold von SacherMasoch, who gave his name to masochism, hanging over this song? As far as its musical ambiance is concerned, the song bears a resemblance to Lowell Fulson’s West Coast blues, as Jagger would later corroborate in an interview. To date, “Tie You Up (The Pain of Love)” has never been performed live.
