From Songfacts: Keith Richards: “I wrote it on piano. It’s sort of like a Little Richard thing. And then when I took it to guitar I really got interested in it. Because before that I was really doing a parody of something like rock and roll piano music. But then it sort of went Celtic on me. Some of these strange drone notes. And it sort of took on another life. And then Charlie got into it with this little go-go beat – this great tom tom bit – and I’m a sucker for that, man. You give me that, especially with Charlie Watts playing it. It was a heavy-duty jungle thing.”
Mick Jagger’s lyrics are a response to critics who said The Stones were too old or irrelevant in the era of Grunge.
This was the second single from Voodoo Lounge. The first was “Love Is Strong.”
Don Was produced this. He had a hit in the ’80s called “Walk The Dinosaur” with his own group Was Not Was.
From the The Rolling Stones – All the Songs book: “You Got Me Rocking” was originally written by Keith for the piano and then transposed to guitar in order to transform it into a typical Stones rock number. “I was playing the guitar, Keith is playing piano and singing,” Mick Jagger tells David Fricke. “And then I started playing slide guitar, and it started to sound like Elmore James. And then back to something else. Finally I said, ‘Keith, you’ve got to come off the piano and play guitar. I can’t hear what’s going on, there’s too much racket!’ Then the song had to take on the band thing, with everybody playing, so you start to codify it a bit, where the chorus is and so on.” Jagger then wrote the words, adopting in the song the role of a man taking what proves to be rather bleak stock of his life. He felt like a boxer who can’t get in the ring, a hooker losing her looks, a writer who can’t write another book. In short, his life was utterly grim until he met the woman who has him rocking now. Like “Love Is Strong,” “You Got Me Rocking” was released as a single (on September 26, 1994). It climbed to number 23 on the UK charts on October 8. The song spawned a number of different versions, including the Perfecto Mix, the Sexy Disco Dub Mix, and the Trance Mix
