Possibly the most-talked about guitarist of the ‘80’s (so far), most notably for his work for and subsequent split with David Bowie. Legend has it that Stevie Ray Vaughan and his band Double Trouble were discovered in a Dallas, Texas, club by the at the time bar-hopping team of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. It seems it all happened with a view to signing them for Rolling Stones Records, the Stones’ recording label, but later on Mick turned them down, thinking that they would not sell enough records for it to be worthwhile. They flew the band to New York to play a private party, and then there was a proposed recording contract with Rolling Stones Records never came through.
Texan guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan (1954-1990) was the great electric blues sensation of the 1980s. From his marvelous ’59 Fender Stratocaster, he extracted the essence of the great black blues guitarists and the fierceness and virtuosity of his idol Jimi Hendrix, although he also showed excellent gifts for jazz instrumentals, especially in his own brilliant compositions. With only four studio albums, his untimely death at age 35 made him a legend of Tejano and blues music of all time.
On July 17 1982, Vaughan and Double Trouble were filmed playing a show at the Continental Club in Austin, TX. The following year, Vaughan’s manager gives the tape to Mick Jagger, allowing the band to perform a private performance at a Rolling Stones party at at New York City’s China Club on April 22 1982. Later on, in 1986, Mick and Jerry Hall announced SRV performing his song ‘Change I’t in a cameo with actor Jon Lovitz on Tv show Saturday Night Live in 1986.
Alt-country singer-songwriter and podcaster Otis Gibbs, who has independently released several albums since 2002, shared the story of how Mick Jagger enjoyed the show during the party. It was a crazy evening and Jagger instantly loved Stevie Ray.
