Capturing Rock ‘n’ Roll: The Iconic Rolling Stones Sticky Fingers Photo Shoot
Back in 1970, The Rolling Stones took part in one of the most legendary promotional photo sessions in rock history. The images, created to promote Sticky Fingers, perfectly captured the band’s raw energy and rebellious spirit—both defining traits of the era. These weren’t just ordinary band photos; they were a reflection of the Stones’ attitude, swagger, and the essence of their music.
The masterminds behind these unforgettable shots were photographers David Montgomery and Peter Webb. Their collaboration resulted in a series of visually striking images that became deeply embedded in rock culture. The photos weren’t just about posing; they told a story, offering an intimate look at the band during a pivotal time in their career.

A Long-Lost Treasure Rediscovered
In early 1972, Webb handed over an unmarked folder of negatives to his photographer brother-in-law for safekeeping. However, as Webb became engrossed in a new career directing commercials for Ridley Scott, he completely forgot about the folder. The darkroom that once housed these images was soon transformed into a cutting room, and the negatives faded into oblivion.
Then, nearly 40 years later, Webb received an unexpected phone call. His brother-in-law had stumbled upon an unmarked bag of negatives among his own work. With a mix of curiosity and excitement, he told Webb, “These might be The Rolling Stones”. Inside were the long-lost group shots from the session, along with an unexpected bonus—never-before-seen plate camera portraits of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, perfectly preserved and waiting to be rediscovered.
The Timeless Impact of the Sticky Fingers Photos
What made these shots so special? It wasn’t just the iconic fashion, the unmistakable rockstar attitude, or the gritty aesthetic—it was the way they effortlessly captured the Stones’ untamed spirit. Each image radiated personality, making it feel as if you were stepping into their world, living the music rather than just hearing it.
A Lasting Legacy in Rock History
Over the years, these Sticky Fingers promo photos have remained timeless, reminding fans of an era when rock was raw, unapologetic, and dangerously cool. They stand as a testament to The Rolling Stones’ lasting influence, proving that their rebellious energy is just as powerful today as it was back then.
