Today in Rolling Stones history: December 31
*Click for DAILY ROLLING STONES CHRONOLOGY 1962-present
New Year’s Eve never became a Rolling Stones tradition, but when the band did brush up against December 31, it tended to leave a mark. From a modest Drill Hall in early-’60s England to prime-time British TV, and from smoky London clubs to a packed New York venue with Keith in full pirate mode, these moments feel like snapshots taken at the edge of time. They’re not about countdowns or champagne clichés, but about where the Stones—and their orbit—happened to land as one year flipped into the next. A loose, slightly accidental history, just like rock ’n’ roll itself.
December 31, 1963: Drill Hall, Lincoln, England. This was the only time in history the Stones played on New Year’s Eve.
Dec. 31, 1965: The Stones appear on Ready Steady Go! The New Year Starts Here (Associated-Rediffusion, British TV) playing Satisfaction and Get Off Of My Cloud, along with The Who, Dusty Springfield, The Animals, The Kinks, Lulu and Tom Jones. The footage from the show is lost.

Dec. 31, 1970: At Ronnie Scott’s club, in London, Charlie attends Ringo Starr’s New Year’s Eve party, where they jam with Eric Clapton, Klaus Voormann, Bobby Keys, Georgie Fame and Maurice Gibb.
December 31, 1992: Keith & the X-Pensive Winos perform at The Academy in New York City. Some footage of the show is broadcast live on U.S. TV as part of the Hard Rock Café New Year’s Special.
