March 20, 1971: The Stones take the unusual step of paying out of their own pocket to publish a full-page advertisement across all major UK music papers, publicly distancing themselves from the album Stone Age, released by Decca Records. In a blunt and carefully worded statement, the band made it clear they had no involvement in the compilation, asserting that “in our opinion the content is below the standard we try to keep.” The move highlighted growing tensions between the band and their former label, as well as their determination to protect their artistic reputation during a period of transition. By openly criticizing the release, they sent a strong message to fans that Stone Age did not reflect their creative intentions, reinforcing their commitment to quality and control over their music.
