A blues tale with hidden tension
Fancy Man Blues captures the Rolling Stones in one of their most intimate storytelling modes. The narrator is enthralled by a woman whose smile and presence pull him in completely, yet uncertainty clouds the romance: he’s convinced another man may be in the picture. That mix of desire and doubt gives the track its emotional kick. Recorded during the Steel Wheels sessions at AIR Studios in Montserrat in spring 1989, the song leans heavily into swamp-blues influences reminiscent of Jimmy Reed and Slim Harpo. Originally released as the B-side to Mixed Emotions, it later resurfaced on Rarities 1971–2003, earning recognition as one of the band’s most overlooked late-period blues performances.

The Rolling Stones’ Raw ‘Fancy Man Blues’ (1989)
The band’s mastery on display
Even after decades together, the Stones prove their instinctive blues feel. The track’s live-in-studio approach allows Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood to trade gritty rhythm and lead guitar work while Charlie Watts and Bill Wyman lock down a steady groove. Chuck Leavell injects a vibrant piano performance that nods toward Ian Stewart’s legacy, adding warmth and movement throughout the arrangement.
Jagger’s harmonica and a rare studio moment
Mick Jagger shines vocally, but his harmonica lifts the track into another league. Two standout solos showcase his phrasing and control, while a fleeting distorted moment—when he accidentally sings into the harmonica mic—reveals the spontaneity of the session. This rare detail reinforces the song’s authenticity and confirms that Fancy Man Blues was captured live.
