A Long-Awaited Return to Santiago

*By Marcelo Sonaglioni

On February 3, 2016 The Rolling Stones finally returned to Santiago de Chile (since their first visit in 1995), transforming the Estadio Nacional into the epicenter of rock ’n’ roll. More than two decades had passed since their previous Chilean appearance, and the sense of anticipation was electric. As part of the América Latina Olé Tour, this show wasn’t just another stop—it was a statement. Opening with the unstoppable drive of Start Me Up, the band immediately erased any lingering doubts about time or distance. Tens of thousands of fans, spanning generations, were united by a shared feeling: this was history in the making. Santiago didn’t just welcome the Stones back—it embraced them like long-lost family.

A Band Still in Full Command

From the first notes onward, the night belonged to the Stones. Mick Jagger commanded the stage with tireless energy, effortlessly connecting with the crowd by slipping in Spanish phrases and referencing local icons like the famous pilucho statue outside the stadium. Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood locked into their signature guitar interplay, gritty and joyful all at once, while Charlie Watts anchored everything with his trademark precision and restraint. The setlist leaned heavily on classics—Paint It Black, Gimme Shelter, Jumpin’ Jack Flash, and Sympathy for the Devil—each one met with massive singalongs. A standout moment came with She’s a Rainbow, selected by Chilean fans, turning the stadium into a glowing, emotional chorus.

A Finale for the Ages

As the night rolled on, Jagger never slowed down, sprinting across the massive stage with the confidence of a frontman who knows exactly who he is. Richards stepped into the spotlight for You Got the Silver and Happy, adding warmth and grit to an already unforgettable performance. Then came the inevitable closer: (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction. Fireworks lit up the Santiago sky as the crowd erupted, voices drowning out the amplifiers. It was the perfect ending to a night that felt both celebratory and defiant. After more than five decades, the Stones proved once again that they don’t just survive eras—they dominate them. Santiago witnessed a concert for the ages: loud, emotional, and unmistakably legendary. Next stop: La Plata, Argentina.
