Rolling Stones unreleased: Covered in Bruises
HIDDEN STONES GEM: COVERED IN BRUISES
Back in ’79 the Rolling Stones were jamming hard at Compass Point Studios in the Bahamas, cooking up tracks for Emotional Rescue. One tune, Covered in Bruises, never made the cut but oozes raw energy. Jagger, Richards, and Wood shine with gritty riffs, swaggering rock vibes, and a touch of soulful experimentation. Shelved at the time, co-author Ronnie Wood recorded his own version for his fourth solo album 2 years later.

More Stones from the vaults: Covered in Bruises
Back in early 1979 the Rolling Stones were deep in the groove at Compass Point Studios in Nassau, Bahamas, laying down tracks for what would become Emotional Rescue. Among these sessions, one song never officially made it onto the album—Covered in Bruises. Written by the classic trio of Jagger, Richards, and Wood, the track captures the band in a raw, experimental mood, blending their signature rock swagger with hints of soulful introspection. While it never hit the public ear at the time, the recording showcases the Stones’ musical curiosity and their knack for riffs that stick long after the track ends.
A Hidden Gem from the Emotional Rescue Sessions
The Bahamas sessions between January 22 and February 12, 1979, were about more than just creating hits; they were a playground for musical exploration. Covered in Bruises is a perfect example, revealing a band comfortable enough to push boundaries while staying rooted in their familiar blues-rock foundation. Mick’s vocals cut with intensity, Keith’s guitar lines wind and tumble, and Ronnie’s contributions add an unpredictable edge that keeps listeners on their toes. Ronnie Wood finally released Covered in Bruises in 1981 on his fourth solo album under the 1234 title, which also lent its name to the album itself.
In short, Covered in Bruises stands as a testament to the Rolling Stones’ relentless drive to innovate. Even when tracks didn’t make it to the album, their energy, craft, and attitude shine through, reminding listeners why the Stones remain one of rock’s most enduring and influential bands.
