The Rolling Stones Get Ready for Their First U.S. Tour in 1964
Back in 1964, The Rolling Stones were gearing up for something that would change their lives forever—their very first tour of the United States. At that point, they were already causing a stir in the UK with their bluesy swagger, raw sound, and rebellious image. But crossing the Atlantic? That was a whole new level of adventure.
When the Stones landed in America, they weren’t quite the household names they are now. The Beatles had just taken the country by storm, and the Stones were seen as the grittier, edgier alternative. They were out to prove themselves, and they came prepared—with sharp suits, wild energy, and a setlist packed with rhythm & blues covers that paid tribute to their American idols.
Underdogs on Tour: How the Stones Won Over the U.S.
The tour kicked off in early June 1964, and it wasn’t always smooth sailing. The crowds were smaller than they’d hoped, and many Americans didn’t quite know what to make of them just yet. But the Stones didn’t let that stop them. They played TV shows like The Hollywood Palace, did radio interviews, and kept grinding out gigs with their signature intensity. Slowly but surely, the U.S. started to take notice.
What’s wild is looking back now and realizing that this “test the waters” tour would be the beginning of a love affair between the Stones and America that still burns today. They may have started out as the underdogs, but by the end of the ’60s, they were rock royalty. That first U.S. tour was rough, loud, and full of lessons—but it set the stage for the global dominance that was just around the corner.
The Stones came to the U.S. in ’64 hungry, determined, and ready to shake things up. And shake things up, they did.
