The Rutles’ All You Need Is Cash
Eric Idle’s 1978 satirical “documentary” TV show about fictionalized band The Rutles (parodying the Beatles), which features Mick Jagger and Ronnie Wood in cameo appearances.
All You Need Is Cash is a satirical “documentary” TV show from 1978, later released on VHS/DVD, created by Eric Idle. It parodies the Beatles and features Mick Jagger and Ronnie Wood in cameo appearances. The show documents the rise and fall of the fictional band The Rutles, formed by Dirk McQuickley and Ron Nasty, with drummer Barry Wom and bass player Stig O’Hara. It follows their journey from rat-infested clubs in Hamburg to their hit albums and the women who eventually broke up the group.
The show’s songs, written by Neil Innes, resemble Beatles tunes and capture the fluffy boy-loves-girl pop style. The documentary also satirizes music experts, critics, and the obsessions of rock chroniclers. Notable personalities like Bill Murray, Michael Palin, George Harrison, Bianca Jagger, John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, and Gilda Radner make appearances, along with Mick Jagger and Paul Simon discussing the Rutles influence on music. It’s a humorous tribute to the Beatles and a commentary on the bizarre aspects of rock stardom.”

More about The Rutles’ All You Need Is Cash
*By Marcelo Sonaglioni
The Rutles: All You Need Is Cash—what a gem. A mockumentary that totally nails the absurdity of the Beatles’ rise to fame, it’s almost like a love letter to the whole rock ‘n’ roll circus. Mick Jagger and Ronnie Wood must’ve watched this and thought, “Yep, that’s exactly how it went down for us.” Seriously, it’s as if they watched The Rutles and thought, “Well, let’s make sure we take ourselves way more seriously.”
The film parodies the Beatles’ journey so well, it’s like a slap in the face to all the fame, the press, and the endless merchandising. And Jagger and Wood—well, they’ve seen their fair share of the madness, so no wonder they’re probably chuckling to themselves. After all, they lived the chaos, but they were smart enough to keep their own spin on it. In the mockumentary, the Rutles mirror the Beatles so much it feels like watching the Stones in a parallel universe. The fame, the drama, and the weirdness—they were all there, just with a lot more tongue-in-cheek humor.
If you haven’t seen it yet, All You Need Is Cash will probably have you thinking, “Wait, did the Stones really go through all of this?” Oh yeah, they did.
