Jagger Takes the Creative Wheel
During the Emotional Rescue sessions in 1979, Mick Jagger assumed near-total creative control as Keith Richards stepped back to focus on sobriety. Jagger explored electric piano melodies, crafted song structures, and guided foundational tracks with Charlie Watts and bassist Ron Wood. Richards contributed only minimal guitar overdubs, leaving Jagger’s vision front and center. Among the studio experiments was the unreleased long version of Emotional Rescue, featuring Bobby Keys on sax and subtle embellishments that highlight the band’s playful spontaneity. This extended take captures the Rolling Stones navigating evolving dynamics, personal challenges, and musical exploration. Raw, exploratory, and unmistakably Stones, it offers fans a glimpse into the creative process behind the iconic partnership, showcasing Jagger’s artistry while preserving the band’s signature swagger.
