Windmill: The Rolling Stones’ Lost Jam from the Goats Head Soup Sessions
Recorded in January 1973 at Village Recorders in Los Angeles, this is one of the Rolling Stones’ most mysterious outtakes from the Goats Head Soup era. Originally the instrumental version of Come to the Ball, it captured the band’s spontaneous creativity during rehearsals that also produced Dancing with Mr. D, Heartbreaker, and Star Star. According to Martin Elliott’s book The Rolling Stones Complete Recording Sessions 1962–2012, the jam likely served as both warm-up and experimentation for their upcoming tour. Some historians believe Windmill evolved into another unreleased track, Wind Call. Though unfinished and never officially released, Windmillremains a fascinating glimpse into the Stones’ raw, unfiltered creative process at a turning point in their 1970s sound.
