WYMAN’S QUICK BUT MEMORABLE REUNION Bill Wyman’s 2012 return to The Rolling Stones wasn’t a full-on comeback—it was just a couple of songs, and he only had one rehearsal! Still, he winged it like a pro, giving fans a taste of that classic vibe. He wasn’t up for traveling to America for such a short stint, and Charlie Watts totally got it. Even brief, this reunion showed the magic Wyman brought to the band’s golden years.
“It was fun in a way… I thought I would get quite heavily involved, so when they said they only wanted me to do two songs I was a bit disappointed. I only had one rehearsal and no sound-check so I just winged it. It was great, but I didn’t want to go to America for two songs. I think they understood. Well, Charlie Watts did!”
When The Rolling Stones marked their 50th anniversary in London back in November 2012, fans were thrilled to see Bill Wyman reappear onstage. For the longtime bassist, it was both a nostalgic and slightly bittersweet moment. He expected to dive deeper into the set, but the band had something different in mind—just two songs. Still, despite minimal rehearsal and no sound-check, Wyman jumped right in and let instinct take over, giving the night an edge of spontaneity.
A Quick Reunion, Not a Full Comeback
Wyman admitted later that he was a little disappointed at the limited involvement. With only one rehearsal under his belt, he found himself “winging it” through the performances. While it worked out fine in the end, he couldn’t help but feel the reunion was more symbolic than musical. That’s why he drew the line when discussions came up about playing in America—crossing the Atlantic for two songs simply didn’t make sense.
Charlie Watts Understood Best
What made the whole experience easier for Wyman was the support of the late Charlie Watts. According to Bill, Charlie understood completely why he wouldn’t commit to more. That simple understanding highlighted the bond the two shared from decades of playing side by side. Even if the 2012 reunion was short-lived, it reminded fans of the chemistry Wyman brought to the band’s golden years and offered a brief, heartfelt glimpse of the Stones’ past meeting their present.
