Keith Richards about touring without the Stones (1979)
“I know I could do it. But there ain’t no reason to tour with my own group. There’s no reason to tour with anyone but the Stones unless something like the New Barbarians thing were to come up. I ain’t got no 5-year plan or anything”

In 1979 Keith Richards embarked on a unique musical journey apart from The Rolling Stones, joining forces with Ronnie Wood in The New Barbarians. This side project emerged partially out of necessity, as Wood needed to fulfill a touring obligation for his solo album Gimme Some Neck. Richards, eager to explore a different dynamic and support his longtime friend, became a key part of the band, offering his signature guitar work and unmistakable stage presence.
The New Barbarians’ brief but memorable run allowed Richards to experience life on the road without the weight of the Rolling Stones’ massive legacy. The band’s lineup featured an eclectic mix of talented musicians, including jazz bassist Stanley Clarke and drummer Joseph ‘Ziggy’ Modeliste (of The Meters), creating a sound that fused rock, funk, and blues. Their performances were raw, unpredictable, and fueled by the camaraderie between Richards and Wood.
For Richards, touring with The New Barbarians was a liberating experience. It gave him a chance to step out of the Stones’ shadow and play music in a more intimate, less pressurized setting. The band’s rebellious spirit and improvisational approach reflected Richards’ love for unfiltered rock’n’roll.
Despite their brief existence, The New Barbarians represent an intriguing chapter in Keith Richards’ career. The band highlighted his capacity to flourish outside the framework of The Rolling Stones, allowing him to explore new musical avenues while staying deeply connected to his rock ‘n’ roll origins. Richards’ passion for collaboration shone brightly during this period, as he embraced the freedom and spontaneity of working with a diverse group of talented musicians.
