Keith Richards about trying on a pirate costume on the Pirates of the Caribbean movie (2005)
“I saw Johnny Depp in L.A. a month ago, and they wheeled in this wardrobe of Disney pirate costumes. Johnny and I spent a great afternoon trying these things on. But that doesn’t mean I’m doing it. At the moment, I turned them down – they’re shooting while I’m touring. I’d love to do it if there was no hassle. But it would be a side trip. I know what my gig is. The idea of working for Disney gives me the shivers in the first place (laughs). Funny that I’ve come all this way with the blues and I’m going to be remembered as a fucking pirate!”

Keith Richards, the legendary guitarist of The Rolling Stones, made an unforgettable appearance in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, playing Captain Teague, the father of Johnny Deppโs iconic character, Captain Jack Sparrow. This cameo, which first appeared in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (2007), was a nod to Richards’ influence on Deppโs portrayal of the swashbuckling pirate. Depp has openly cited Richards as a primary inspiration for his eccentric, rockstar-like interpretation of Jack Sparrow, drawing parallels between the rock legendโs persona and the free-spirited pirate.
Richards’ appearance in the film was both a tribute to his cultural impact and a natural fit, given his wild, untamed reputation in the music world. His portrayal of Captain Teague was brief but memorable, embodying a pirate who exudes the same rebellious spirit as Richards himself. The role was well-received by fans, and Richards’ undeniable charisma brought an added layer of authenticity to the filmโs pirate theme.
For Depp, having Richards appear in the film was a full-circle moment (well he had to wear a pirate costume!) as he admired the guitarist for years and even based much of his portrayal of Jack Sparrow on him. Richardsโ cameo further solidified the rock-and-roll connection between the two iconic figures, making the Pirates franchise even more memorable for music fans.
