Keith Richards on being in a band
“There’s something beautifully friendly and elevating about a bunch of guys playing music together. This wonderful little world that is unassailable. It’s really teamwork, one guy supporting the others, and it’s all for one purpose, and there’s no flies in the ointment, for a while. And nobody conducting, it’s all up to you. It’s really jazz, that’s the big secret. Rock and roll ain’t nothing but jazz with a hard backbeat.”
Keith Richards has often spoken about the unique camaraderie that defines The Rolling Stones, reflecting on the magic that comes from a group of musicians creating together. In his view, there’s something profoundly uplifting about a bunch of friends jamming and playing music. It’s an experience that goes beyond just making sound; it’s about the bond, the shared energy, and the effortless connection that comes when the band is in sync. The chemistry between Richards, Mick Jagger, Charlie Watts, and the rest of the band has been the cornerstone of their success, and it’s this unspoken, unbreakable camaraderie that has kept the band together for decades.
Richards describes the world the band created as a “wonderful little world” — one that is almost invincible and untouched by outside forces. This world, forged in the pressure cooker of fame and constantly evolving through their musical innovations, remains theirs alone. No matter how challenging the outside world has been, whether through personal struggles or the constant media attention, their shared musical journey has remained a sanctuary.
It’s this sense of belonging and musical brotherhood that has kept the Stones going strong for so long. Richards’ ability to reflect on this with such warmth and authenticity is what endears him to fans and highlights the true beauty of rock’n’roll: the joy of playing together, elevating one another, and creating something that transcends the mundane aspects of life. The Rolling Stones’ legacy is not just in their music, but in this unique bond that has stood the test of time.
