With Goats Head Soup fresh out, they had left behind the chaos of Exile-era France and were fully embracing their status as untouchable rock royalty. That meant private jets, debauchery on a global scale, and enough tax-exile drama to make a lawyer sweat, and not having a permanent home.

Mick Jagger was juggling his rock god duties with his new role as a high-society jet-setter, while Keith Richards… well, he was doing his best to keep standing. The band had spent years perfecting the art of excess, and 1973 was no exception. The Pacific Tour was a blur of wild shows, run-ins with authorities, and the usual trail of destruction. Oh, and let’s not forget Keith and Anita Pallenberg’s little drug-related mishap in England—that didn’t exactly help their image.

Still, through all the chaos, the Stones kept rolling, delivering some of their most legendary performances. They may have been living on the edge (or slightly over it), but that reckless energy was exactly what made them unstoppable. After all, what’s rock and roll without a little danger?
