The Nellcôte sessions are a storied episode in the Rolling Stones’ history. In 1971, facing tax issues in the UK, the band retreated to the south of France and set up at Keith Richards’ rented villa, Nellcôte.
This period of exile was characterized by both intense creativity and hedonism. The villa’s basement was converted into an impromptu recording studio, where the band, along with a rotating group of musicians and associates, crafted much of the material for their renowned album, Exile on Main St.
The environment at Nellcôte was a blend of chaos and inspiration. Drug use was prevalent, and the distinction between work and revelry was often blurred. Nevertheless, from this tumultuous setting emerged some of the Stones’ most raw and impactful music ever.
