Rolling Stones Unreleased: Another CR

Written by: Jagger/Richards
Recorded: Sandymount Studios (Ronnie Wood’s house), Kildare, Ireland, July-Sept. 1993; Windmill Lane Studios, Dublin, Ireland, Nov-Dec. 1993 (Voodoo Lounge sessions)
Guest musicians: Chuck Leavell (keyboards)

From Martin Elliott’s book THE ROLLING STONES COMPLETE RECORDING SESSIONS 1962-2012:
A nine-minute jam featuring the drums of Charlie Watts on his riser. It starts off with Ronnie Wood improvising on pedal steel and then Charlie starts what it is essentially a drum solo, something not normally associated with the Stones. At the end of the drum solo a heavier electric guitar joing the jam. An organ also enters and Mick Jagger joins in on a quick vocal line, “sitting and thinking which way to go”.

A Hidden Gem from the Voodoo Vaults

Imagine stumbling upon a raw, nine-minute jam session where The Rolling Stones toss out the rulebook and just play. That’s what Another CR feels like—an unreleased studio cut from the 1993 Voodoo Lounge sessions that never made it to the final album. Recorded partly at Ronnie Wood’s Sandymount Studios in Kildare and later at Windmill Lane Studios in Dublin, the track offers a rare, unpolished glimpse into the band’s creative chaos. Ronnie opens the jam with some dreamy pedal steel work before Charlie Watts takes center stage with an uncharacteristic drum solo—yes, a Charlie Watts drum solo, something you don’t often hear in Stones lore. Then things build: the rhythm thickens, a gritty electric guitar jumps in, and Chuck Leavell’s organ smooths out the edges.

Off-the-Cuff and Off-the-Map

This isn’t your typical Stones track—it’s freer, looser, and experimental in all the right ways. What began as an improvisation turned into a swirling, hypnotic piece where each member tosses something into the mix, then steps back to let it breathe. The jam’s lack of structure is its strength, capturing a moment when the band, still decades deep into their career, could surprise themselves as much as anyone else. While Another CR may never headline a greatest hits collection, it serves as a cool reminder that The Rolling Stones were still chasing sounds in 1993—unafraid to stretch out, get weird, and just see what happens.
