Inside Compass Point: The Rolling Stones in Nassau, 1979
*By Marcelo Sonaglioni
In January and February of 1979, The Rolling Stones settled into Compass Point Studios in Nassau, Bahamas, for what would become the early sessions of their Emotional Rescue album. Away from the chaos of big-city studios, Compass Point offered the band a relaxed tropical setting to experiment and unwind. This period was marked by both focused creativity and playful improvisation—capturing the Stones in a looser, funkier groove than usual.
The laid-back island atmosphere seeped into the recordings, influencing the sound and vibe of tracks that would make the final cut, like Dance (Pt. 1), the very Emotional Rescue and Send It to Me. But not everything recorded during those sessions made it to the album. In fact, some of the most intriguing moments never saw an official release—until they began surfacing on bootlegs decades later.
Guitar Lesson: A Raw, Unreleased Studio Jam
Among these buried treasures is the instrumental piece Guitar Lesson—a raw, in-the-moment jam that gives listeners a rare, unfiltered glimpse into the Stones’ creative process. Stripped of vocals and structure, the track feels like a spontaneous workshop between guitarists Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood, exchanging riffs and textures with easy chemistry.
Though it’s not a polished song in the traditional sense, it showcases the kind of musical shorthand that only comes with years of playing together. It’s gritty, loose, and full of character—qualities that define the Stones at their most authentic.
Guitar Lesson might not have fit the final Emotional Rescue lineup, but it remains a fascinating artifact of the sessions—evidence that even their cast-off ideas carried the unmistakable swagger of The Rolling Stones.
