Rolling Stones unreleased: I Need You

The Rolling Stones unreleased song I Need You captures the band in full creative motion during the 1978 Some Girls sessions in France. This rough early version mixes loose energy with a bright country steel guitar that gives the track a distinctive flavor. Mick Jagger sounds like he is building the lyrics in real time, while Keith Richards adds a strong vocal presence that brings extra grit and character. Melody-wise, the song echoes I Can’t Help It, but moves in a more rustic direction. “I Need You” offers fans a fascinating glimpse of the Stones experimenting freely in the studio.
Written by: Jagger/Richards
Recorded: EMI-Pathé Marconi Studios, Boulogne-Billancourt, France, Jan. 5-March 2 1978 (Some Girls sessions)
From Martin Elliott’s book The Rolling Stones Complete Recording Sessions 1962-2012:
I Need You was in an early stage, but the country steel guitar shines through while Jagger struggles with what seems unfinished lyrics asd he promises not to fuck her too much! Keith is featured prominently on vocals. The songs is very close melody-wise to I Can’t Help It all be it in a different style.

Unearthed and Unfiltered: The Raw Spirit of I Need You
Hidden among the outtakes of the Some Girls sessions, I Need You offers a gritty, unpolished glimpse into the Rolling Stones’ experimental side during their prolific 1978 stretch at EMI-Pathé Marconi Studios in France. Though never officially released, this early-stage recording carries a unique charm. Keith Richards steps into the spotlight with prominent vocal lines, sharing space with a struggling but emotive Mick Jagger, whose lyrics—still in flux—veer into the raw and risqué. One particularly eyebrow-raising promise from Jagger (“not to fuck her too much”) hints at the band’s unfiltered creative process during these sessions. Despite the rough edges, the track has an undeniable allure, especially with the shimmering presence of a country-style steel guitar that cuts through the mix. Even in its incomplete form, I Need You feels like an unvarnished snapshot of the Stones testing boundaries and chasing spontaneous magic in the studio.
A Melodic Cousin with a Country Twist
Musically, I Need You is reminiscent of I Can’t Help It, though its styling shifts into a different sonic territory—less polished, more country-tinged. The steel guitar provides a distinctly Americana flavor, showcasing the band’s continued flirtation with country elements that had surfaced before in tracks like Far Away Eyes. Jagger’s vocal hesitations paired with Richards’ more assertive delivery create a layered dynamic, suggesting the band was still navigating the track’s direction. While it may lack lyrical refinement, the bones of a compelling tune are undeniably present, giving Stones aficionados a tantalizing look at a rough gem that, with just a little more polish, could’ve slid right into their late ’70s repertoire.
