A Rolling Stones’ Hidden Tracks from 1993: I’m Fallin’
In the spring of 1993, deep in the laid-back tropical atmosphere of Blue Wave Studios in Barbados, something unexpected happened: Mick Jagger and Charlie Watts teamed up to record a slow-burning, emotionally rich track that few fans have heard—I’m Fallin’. Written by the iconic Jagger/Richards duo, this unreleased gem emerged during the Voodoo Lounge sessions, a fertile period creatively that would soon yield a Grammy-winning album.
Yet I’m Fallin’ didn’t make the final cut. Instead, it drifted quietly into obscurity, surfacing only on the bootleg Voodoo Residue, cherished by diehard collectors. The track stands out for its soul-infused atmosphere and restrained tempo—Jagger’s vocal performance leaning toward vulnerability, while Watts lays down a minimal yet precise beat. It’s not flashy, but it’s intimate. It feels like a confessional set to music, and it shows a different emotional side of a band usually known for swagger and strut.
A Glimpse Behind the Curtain
Unlike the gritty swagger of many Voodoo Lounge tracks, I’m Fallin’ reveals a softer, more reflective tone. It’s the Stones in low gear, stripping things back to emotional essence rather than stadium-filling riffs. This kind of song isn’t built for radio play—it’s built for headphones, dim lights, and maybe a glass of something strong. It’s a reminder that behind the riffs and wild stage antics, The Rolling Stones could tap into something tender and raw when the moment called for it. While it may not have made the album, I’m Fallin’ offers a fascinating window into what else was possible during a creatively charged era for the band.
