The Rolling Stones Cover Johnny Winter at Hyde Park (1969)
Not many fans remember that during their iconic free concert at Hyde Park on July 5, 1969, The Rolling Stones played Johnny Winter’s I’m Yours and I’m Hers. Also known as Lemon Squeezer, the track from Winter’s second album was a surprising and soulful addition to the setlist. While the show is mostly remembered for Mick Taylor’s live debut and as a tribute to Brian Jones, this bluesy cover added something special. It was a nod to the band’s deep blues roots and their respect for Winter’s raw guitar work. Played in front of a massive crowd, the moment showcased the Stones’ range and their ability to honor musical influences while still making a song feel completely their own.
Johnny Winter is the second studio album from the legendary blues guitarist, released in 1969 by Columbia Records. Much like his debut album The Progressive Blues Experiment, this one blends Winter’s own original compositions with covers of classic blues tracks by legendary artists. His ability to take these older songs and inject them with his signature fiery guitar playing and raw emotion really set him apart in the blues scene.
Johnny Winter on Writing I’m Yours and I’m Hers
-Your song I’m Yours and I’m Hers. What do you remember about the writing of that?
Johnny Winter: “I don’t remember exactly when I wrote that. Right before we recorded it, I think, in ’69. I don’t really remember a whole lot about writing that”
With this album, Johnny Winter began to establish himself as a formidable force in rock and blues, gaining attention for his explosive style and the authenticity he brought to the genre. The track I’m Yours and I’m Hers, included on it, became one of its standout songs, showcasing not only Winter’s impressive guitar skills but also his deep respect for blues traditions. At the same time, he infused it with his own unique touch, combining technical virtuosity, passion, and a fresh energy that set him apart. Winter’s intense performance and emotional delivery helped cement his reputation as one of the most influential and respected blues-rock guitarists of his generation.
