In 1982, the Rolling Stones hit the Pathé Marconi studios in Paris to work on what would become Undercover, their 17th studio album. These sessions marked a major shift in their sound, incorporating elements of new wave, funk, and even punk, which was a big departure from their earlier rock ‘n’ roll roots. The band was feeling experimental, ready to push boundaries after years of solidifying their iconic rock status.
At Pathé Marconi, they mixed it up—while still keeping their signature swagger, the Stones leaned into synthesizers, electronic beats, and a grittier, more edgy vibe. Mick Jagger was on top of his game, pushing the band in new directions both vocally and stylistically. Keith Richards, as always, brought his raw energy and guitar chops, but this time, he was diving into a more layered, experimental approach to his riffs.
The sessions were intense. The band had no shortage of creative tension, but that’s what made it all come together. There was a sense of urgency and experimentation that reflected the changing musical landscape of the early ‘80s. Songs like Undercover of the Night and She Was Hot (and lots that remain unreleased, like In Your Hand) combined infectious grooves with political and personal lyrics. But not everything was easy—there were moments of frustration and conflict, with tensions between Jagger and Richards, especially when it came to the album’s direction. Despite this, Undercover came together as a unique album, standing apart in their discography with its boldness.
Even though it wasn’t as commercially successful as some of their previous records, the Undercover sessions at Pathé Marconi showed that the Rolling Stones were still willing to take risks and evolve their sound, keeping them relevant in the changing music scene of the ‘80s.
