Look Out Baby: The Forgotten Voodoo Lounge Jam
*By Marcelo Sonaglioni
During the Voodoo Lounge sessions in 1993, the Rolling Stones embarked on numerous musical explorations, some of which never saw an official release. Look Out Baby stands out as a unique experiment, blending bluesy vocal stylings with an Eastern-influenced synthesized riff, reminiscent of Continental Drift from Steel Wheels.
The track’s foundation was built around a drum machine, providing a steady pulse that allowed the band to stretch out and explore different textures. Keith Richards’ guitar work and Mick Jagger’s vocals meshed with the hypnotic keyboard-driven melody, creating an atmospheric, almost trance-like quality. Unlike their more straightforward rock numbers, Look Out Baby leaned into the experimental side of the Stones, fusing blues, world music, and electronic elements.
Though ultimately left off the final Voodoo Lounge album, the song remains an intriguing piece of the band’s creative process during that era, offering a glimpse into their willingness to push sonic boundaries beyond their classic sound. The Voodoo Lounge sessions were a period of reinvention for the Rolling Stones, as they sought to modernize their approach while staying true to their roots.
The use of a drum machine in Look Out Baby was a notable departure from their typical live-in-the-studio approach, hinting at their openness to contemporary production techniques. The track’s hypnotic groove and fusion of blues with an Eastern-influenced riff showcased their ability to experiment with different musical landscapes.
While it never made the official tracklist, its existence highlights the band’s restless creativity. Like many of their unreleased gems, Look Out Baby serves as a reminder that the Stones’ recording sessions often produced fascinating outtakes that remain hidden treasures for fans.
