The Satanic Majesties sessions, which took place primarily in 1967, were a defining and experimental period for The Rolling Stones. This time marked a significant departure from their earlier rock and blues roots, as the band embraced the burgeoning psychedelic music scene, which was heavily influenced by the cultural shifts of the era. The sessions for their album Their Satanic Majesties Request were driven by a desire to explore new sounds, instruments, and studio techniques, heavily inspired by the psychedelic rock movement and the rise of counterculture.
In the context of Their Satanic Majesties Request, the band experimented with various sonic elements, including complex overdubbing, unconventional instruments (like mellotron, organ, and sitar), and exotic effects. The album reflected the influence of bands like The Beatles, who had recently released Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, and the growing interest in Eastern music, spirituality, and the effects of LSD.
