Soul Blues: An Unreleased Rolling Stones Jam

*By Marcelo Sonaglioni

Recorded in July 1967 at Olympic Sound Studios in London, Soul Blues is an unreleased instrumental track from Their Satanic Majesties Request sessions. Unlike the more psychedelic and experimental tracks that made it onto the album, this piece stands out for its stripped-down, rhythmic approach.

The recording features only the rhythm section of the Rolling Stones, with Bill Wyman on bass and Charlie Watts on percussion. With no guitars or vocals, Soul Blues focuses entirely on groove and rhythm, showcasing the tight interplay between Wyman and Watts. Their steady, fluid performance creates a hypnotic, bluesy feel, highlighting the band’s deep connection to rhythm and blues despite the experimental nature of the Satanic Majesties era.

Three different outtakes of Soul Blues exist, suggesting that the Stones explored multiple variations of this jam. While the track never made it to the final album, it offers a rare glimpse into the band’s creative process during one of their most adventurous recording periods.
