More about ‘When You’re Gone’ by The Rolling Stones

*By Marcelo Sonaglioni
The Rolling Stones’ When You’re Gone is an intriguing unreleased track from the prolific Some Girls sessions, recorded in 1978. During this period, the band was experimenting with a variety of styles and sounds, with a heavy influence from contemporary rock, punk, and disco trends. This particular song is notable for its raw energy and the interplay of Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood’s guitars, capturing the vibrant and somewhat chaotic essence of the sessions.

Ronnie Wood’s slide guitar work stands out, adding a gritty blues-rock texture to the track. His playing during these sessions often had a loose, improvisational quality, which meshed perfectly with the band’s approach. The sessions were also marked by the band’s late-night energy, fueled by their infamous lifestyles. In fact he included an all-instrumental version of the song )under the name Redeyes) in his 1981 solo album 1234 (“inspired by Mick Jagger”, as detailed in the album)

While When You’re Gone didn’t make the final cut for the Some Girls album, it remains a fascinating glimpse into the creative process of the Stones during one of their most dynamic eras. The track exemplifies the raw, unpolished edge that fans and collectors have come to treasure in their unreleased material.
