Your Angel Steps Out of Heaven captures the delicate ache of fleeting love like no other track. George Jones’s original version delivers raw emotion, telling the story of an untouchable, angelic figure who steps into life only to vanish, leaving longing in their wake. The Flying Burrito Brothers later gave the song a haunting country-rock twist, layering Gram Parsons’ signature style over the original melancholy. Both versions explore heartbreak, desire, and the fleeting nature of meaningful connections. Whether you’re drawn to classic country storytelling or pioneering country-rock vibes, this track remains a timeless exploration of love, loss, and emotional depth.
Written by: Jack Ripley
Recorded: RCA Studios, Hollywood, USA, Aug-Sept. 1978
Guest musicians: Ian McLagan (organ)
From Martin Elliott’s book The Rolling Stones Complete Recording Sessions 1962-2012:
Jack Ripley the songwriter was for many a year a co-hort of George Jones who recorded this track as later did Elvis Costello. It had come to Keith Richards’ attention from Gram Parsons, who did a version with The Flying Burrito Brothers. Ronnie Wood plays pedal steel and Keith not only does the vocals (and overdubbed backing vocals) but probably the piano as well. Ian McLagan plays a very slow organ.

The Emotional Power of Your Angel Steps Out of Heaven
Your Angel Steps Out of Heaven is more than just a song—it’s a heartfelt journey through love’s most delicate moments. Originally performed by the legendary country singer George Jones, the track captures the quiet agony of longing, heartbreak, and fleeting romance. Jones’s raw, emotive vocals and soul-stirring lyrics place listeners directly into the world of a man captivated by an angelic figure—someone perfect and unattainable—who steps into his life only to vanish just as suddenly. Every note, from the tender phrasing to the subtle twang of traditional country instrumentation, conveys the ache of love slipping through one’s fingers. It’s a story of desire and loss, of a moment so brief it leaves an indelible mark on the heart, making the song resonate across generations and music genres alike. For anyone drawn to deeply emotional storytelling, Jones’s version is a masterclass in expressing vulnerability and human longing through song.
From George Jones to The Flying Burrito Brothers
The song’s timeless appeal was further cemented when The Flying Burrito Brothers, pioneers of country-rock fusion, brought their own interpretation to it. Under the influence of Gram Parsons, the band infused the track with a haunting, mournful atmosphere that retained Jones’s original melancholy while adding layers of rock and gospel influence. Parsons’s emotive style and the group’s signature blend of genres transformed the song, giving it a fresh, almost ethereal quality that expanded its emotional reach. Both versions—Jones’s classic country and the Burrito Brothers’ country-rock iteration—share a common thread: a focus on love’s fragility, the fleeting nature of meaningful connections, and the bittersweet ache that follows. Across decades and musical styles, Your Angel Steps Out of Heaven remains a poignant reminder of the universal experience of longing and the beauty of moments that, however brief, leave lasting emotional echoes.
