In 1986, Keith Richards teamed up with his idol Chuck Berry for the legendary concert film Hail! Hail! Rock ‘n’ Roll, celebrating Berry’s 60th birthday in his hometown St. Louis. The movie, directed by Taylor Hackford, brought together an all-star lineup, but it was the dynamic (and often tense) relationship between Richards and Berry that stole the show.
Keith, a lifelong fan, was brought in as the musical director, a role that turned out to be both an honor and a challenge. Anyone who knows Chuck Berry’s reputation knows he didn’t take orders from anyone—not even Keith Richards. Throughout the rehearsals, Berry’s stubborn, no-nonsense attitude clashed with Keith’s laid-back but determined approach. One famous moment in the film shows Berry snapping at Keith for adjusting his amp settings, leading to an exchange that perfectly sums up their dynamic.
Despite the backstage drama, the performances were pure magic. Keith, along with musicians like Eric Clapton (shown here rehearsing with Chuck and Keith during a guitar jam), Etta James, Robert Cray, and more, helped bring Berry’s biggest hits to life, from Johnny B. Goode to Roll Over Beethoven. The chemistry on stage was undeniable, with Keith grinning ear to ear as he traded licks with the man who inspired his entire career.
In the end, Hail! Hail! Rock ‘n’ Roll became more than just a concert film—it was a tribute to Chuck Berry’s legacy and the rebellious spirit of rock and roll. And for Keith Richards, it was a chance to stand beside one of his greatest influences (even if it meant taking a few verbal punches along the way)
