About the 3rd ‘Rock’n Roll Hall Of Fame Induction’, 1988
Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr have never shared a hug at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction ceremony, whether due to unique circumstances or lingering tensions. However, this will change on Saturday, April 18, when McCartney will induct Ringo into the Hall as a solo artist.
The Beatles were inducted as a band in 1988, but Paul McCartney chose not to attend. George Harrison, Ringo, and Yoko Ono, John Lennon’s widow, were present to accept the honor. Mick Jagger had the honor of inducting the band, and Ringo took the microphone to crack a few jokes.
“I’ve been nominated to say hi and thank you,” Ringo joked. “You can sit down. I’m going to be here for hours. I’d like to thank everyone here and everyone who inducted us into the Hall of Fame… Thank you, thank you, thank you.”
Harrison spoke about the Beatles’ origins, crediting the influence of other Hall of Fame members for inspiring their band. He added, “We just wanted to get guitars and form a band because we didn’t have proper jobs at the time. Anyway, it worked out fine and got bigger than we ever expected.”
Later, Harrison and Ringo performed I Saw Her Standing There with an all-star group, including Billy Joel, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, and Mick Jagger.
Meanwhile, McCartney issued a statement explaining his absence, citing unresolved business differences with the Beatles that made him feel hypocritical at the time. However, by 1994, McCartney inducted Lennon as a solo artist and will now do the same for Ringo in Cleveland. McCartney revealed that he started the process for Ringo’s induction, getting support from Bruce Springsteen and Dave Grohl. He then offered to do the induction, and the matter was settled.
