Rolling Stones on video: Keith Richards with peers at the 1992 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremony

On January 15, 1992, the 7th Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony took place at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City, where Keith Richards played a memorable role. That evening he delivered a speech honoring legendary guitar maker Leo Fender before officially inducting him into the Hall of Fame. Later in the night, Keith joined the All-Star Band, a powerhouse ensemble made up of some of music’s most iconic names. Together, they tore through a series of classics, performing vibrant renditions ofGreen Onions, All Along the Watchtower, When Something Is Wrong With My Baby, Soul Man, Big River, and several others. The lineup for this special jam included Johnny Cash, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Little Richard, Neil Young, John Fogerty, The Edge, and many more, turning the event into an unforgettable celebration of rock history.

Who got in: Bobby Bland, Booker T. and the MG’s, Johnny Cash, the Jimi Hendrix Experience, the Isley Brothers, Sam and Dave, the Yardbirds, Elmore James, Professor Longhair, Leo Fender, Bill Graham, Doc Pomus.

Highlights: “We sort of laid the way for barbarism” says Jeff Beck of the Yardbirds. Keith Richards does the honors for late electric-guitar pioneer Fender. “He gave us the weapons”, Richards says. During the jam Johnny Cash trades licks with Richards and Little Richard. Rock Hall co-founders Ahmet Ertegun and Jann Wenner announce plans to hold the 1993 ceremony in Los Angeles. What about Cleveland, where insufficient funds have delayed construction of the hall? “There will be a ceremony in Cleveland” Wenner says. “Maybe”, Ertegun says. “Maybe, yes”, Wenner says.
