About The Rolling Stones’ 1970 European Tour
The Stones embarked on their first European tour since 1967 (a total of 23 shows, starting on Aug. 23 in Malmö, Sweden, and wrapping it up on Oct. 9 in Amsterdam) mirroring the format of the 1969 American Tour but also featuring songs from their “Let It Bleed” album. Despite this, they debuted new tracks like “Brown Sugar,” “Dead Flowers,” and “You Gotta Move,” which wouldn’t appear on record until “Sticky Fingers” released six months later. Unlike previous tours, they typically played one show a night, except for Milan.
Continuing their tradition, altercations arose during the tour. In Stockholm on September 4th, police interrupted fearing a fan surge provoked by Jagger. He responded by directing the microphone towards them and later suggested the audience sit for the next song. In Hamburg on September 14th, about a thousand forged tickets were denied entry, requiring two hundred policemen to manage the situation. In West Berlin two days later, clashes between youths and police led to fifty arrests. Milan’s show on October 1st saw two thousand youths attempting to gatecrash, resulting in police using tear gas to disperse the riot, leading to injuries and 63 arrests.
