The Rolling Stones in the press: “Stones Tour: Jagger ‘Ticket Touts’ Row”

The Rolling Stones were this week involved in a second major row surrounding their long-awaited British concert tour next month. Mick Jagger lashed out over reports that Bristol’s Colston Hall had been selling tickets in multiple blocks of ten—which benefited ticket touts and worked against individual fans—and said that if the Stones had their way they would “recall every ticket and refund every penny paid.”
This new controversy follows last week’s report that the group had already made other changes in the tour, because they felt students might be crowding out members of the public at university dates on the itinerary.
When complaints of a potential black market at Bristol were made Jagger commented: “This defeats the whole object of us touring at reasonable prices.”
He added: “Why should some scalper make a fantastic profit? If the allegations are true then it shows a complete lack of awareness and responsibility. If we had our way we would recall every ticket … and sell new tickets properly.”
The manager of the venue told NME that the reports had been wildly exaggerated. Many had queued all night on behalf of friends. They had been given blocks of ten seats, but most people who wanted only two or three seats queued for hours. Demand was estimated at 5,000 and there were only 4,000 places available, so it was obvious there would be complaints. The only block applications had come by letter from seven accredited clubs or organisations.
