The Rolling Stones’ Back, Behind and In Front

In early 1966 fan magazines, and some media as well, were reporting that The Rolling Stones were about to follow the footsteps of the Beatles and the Herman’s Hermits with their own movie. Mick, Keith, Brian, Bill and Charlie were rumoured to be starring in Back Behind and In Front, which would be co-directed by Andrew Loog Oldham and Allen Klein. Eventually, the Aftermath album was planned to be the soundtrack for the film. It was also said at the time that Nicholas Ray, director of Rebel Without A Cause, was to direct it, but the deal fell through when Mick met Ray and didn’t like him. But then the film never happened, sadly.

More About Back, Behind and In Front, The Rolling Stones’ Planned Movie That Never Took Place

*By Marcelo Sonaglioni

It was early 1966 and fan magazines and the media were practically bursting with excitement, claiming that the Rolling Stones were about to follow in the mighty footsteps of the Beatles and Herman’s Hermits by starring in their very own movie. Yep, Mick, Keith, Brian, Bill, and Charlie were supposedly going to star in a film called Back Behind and In Front, co-directed by Andrew Loog Oldham and Allen Klein. Naturally, the Aftermath album was supposed to be the soundtrack—because what better way to tie it all together than with a film and album combo, right? (Ref. Forgotten Rolling Stones film)

But wait, it gets better. The rumor mill also claimed that the legendary Nicholas Ray, director of Rebel Without a Cause, was going to direct the film. But, surprise, surprise, the deal fell apart when Mick met Ray and just didn’t like him. Maybe Ray’s cool Hollywood director vibes didn’t jive with Mick’s rock star ego, or maybe he just wasn’t impressed with Ray’s legendary status. Who knows? Either way, the whole project was promptly scrapped. So, no Rolling Stones movie, no Aftermath soundtrack film, and no Rebel Without a Cause meets Stones magic. Instead, it became just another “what could’ve been” in the band’s storied career. You know, the usual. (Ref. Forgotten Rolling Stones film)
