Keith Richards’ Unfinished Hollywood Adventure: Past All Dishonor

In 1982, Keith Richards was poised to make his long-awaited acting debut, stepping into the world of cinema with a role that seemed tailor-made for his rock ‘n’ roll persona. He was set to star in a film adaptation of James M. Cain’s steamy novel Past All Dishonor, portraying a pianist in an 1860s bordello. Adding to the intrigue, his wife, Patti Hansen, was cast as a prostitute in the film. The project had all the makings of a cult classic, blending period drama with the rebellious spirit of rock.

Past All Dishonor is a historical novel by James M. Cain, first published in 1946 by Alfred A. Knopf. Set against the backdrop of the American Civil War, the story follows the doomed romance between a Confederate spy and a prostitute from a mining camp in California and Nevada. Widely acclaimed by critics, the novel became one of Cain’s most commercially successful works.

However, the production never reached completion, leaving Past All Dishonor as a lost Hollywood dream. While various reasons contributed to its downfall, one particularly amusing rumor was that Keith’s acting skills left much to be desired. The rock legend, known for his charismatic stage presence, apparently struggled to translate that magic onto the silver screen.

Beyond his on-screen role, Keith was also invited to compose music for the film’s soundtrack, which could have added a unique Stones-infused flavor to the project. But fate—and the Rolling Stones’ relentless schedule—had other plans. The band’s European tour in 1982 took priority, making it impossible for Keith to commit fully to the film.

Though Past All Dishonor never saw the light of day, it remains one of those intriguing “what could have been” moments in Keith Richards’ storied career—an unfinished chapter in his legacy of rock and rebellion.
