While subsequent releases like Hot Rocks and More Hot Rocks have superseded it, Big Hits (High Tide and Green Grass) remains the quintessential dose of early Stones at their most accessible, besides their first five U.S. albums. Along with some very outstanding photography and artwork (both the album’s cover and Simon & Garfunkel’s Sounds of Silence artwork were photographed by Guy Webster at Franklin Canyon in 1965), the original LP had one of the first iconic gatefold album covers in rock history. One of the most powerful sets of tracks available, when listening to it now or in 1966, it’s easy to see how the Stones established themselves as the most well-known rock and roll rebels of the decade, almost too early for the 1960s (the majority of the content from 1964 or 1965)

The fierce, confrontational fuzztone melody and sexually acrimonious lyrics of “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction”, the sobbing R&B of “Time Is on My Side,” the louder-than-life rhythm guitars on “It’s All Over Now” and “The Last Time,” the balladry, folk, and soul style of “As Tears Go By” and “Tell Me,” and the frantic, pounding punk anthem “Get Off of My Cloud” are highlights of a 12-song set that has no weak points, only peaks. The rest of the songs make for a body of work that’s still amazing to hear decades after its original release.
