The Rolling Stones Light Up Barcelona in Style

With a futuristic stage that looked like a mash-up of Metropolis, the NYC Guggenheim, and London’s City skyline, the Rolling Stones made a thunderous entrance. Fireworks and the opening riff of Start Me Up kicked off the night with a literal bang. Backed by an all-star ensemble—bassist Darryl Jones, keyboardist Chuck Leavell, backup singers Lisa Fischer and Bernard Fowler, sax legends Bobby Keys and Tim Ries, and more—this was no ordinary rock show.

The Stones performed for nearly two hours, diving deep into their legendary catalog. Though the tour supported A Bigger Bang—an album hailed as one of their best in decades—they leaned heavily on the classics. From diehard fans who saw them back in the ‘70s to twenty-somethings singing along for the first time, four generations packed the venue.

Jagger Charms, History Repeats

At around 10:15 PM, the legendary quartet appeared to a roar of tens of thousands: Mick Jagger in his red blazer; Keith Richards with his shiny jacket and pirate-like mustache (a nod to Pirates of the Caribbean); Ronnie Wood on guitar, and the ever-steady Charlie Watts on drums.

Jagger greeted the crowd in both Catalan and Spanish, even apologizing for past concert cancellations. He danced, jumped, and sprinted across the stage with endless energy—proof that age hasn’t dimmed his rock ‘n’ roll fire.

This marked the Stones’ sixth concert in Barcelona since their Spanish debut at the city’s Monumental bullring in 1976. After Barcelona, the band headed to San Sebastián, Madrid, and El Ejido, before wrapping up the European leg in London on August 26. Rock may age, but clearly, it never fades.
