A Swiss Night to Remember: The Rolling Stones in Basel, 1995
On July 29, 1995, the Rolling Stones brought their Voodoo Lounge Tour to the Fussballstadion St. Jakob in Basel, Switzerland—and what a night it was. The air buzzed with anticipation as thousands of fans packed the stadium to witness rock royalty in action. It wasn’t just another tour stop; it was the Stones doing what they do best—delivering gritty, electrifying rock ‘n’ roll in the heart of Europe.
The setlist was a wild ride through decades of Stones classics. Mick Jagger had the crowd eating out of the palm of his hand. Charlie Watts kept things steady with his trademark cool precision, while Ronnie Wood and Keith Richards played off each other with that unmistakable swagger. And speaking of Keith…
Keith Richards, Clean in the Alps?
Basel might’ve been a hotbed of Stones mania in 1995, but Switzerland also holds a more personal connection to Keith Richards. Back in the late ’70s, it was the peaceful Swiss Alps where he reportedly went to detox—yep, Keith and clean living, at least for a while. That detox phase is part of the Richards legend and the infamous myth about the blood change. Actually he never had his blood changed there (“Someone asked me how I cleaned up, so I told them I went to Switzerland and had my blood completely changed”) and it makes his return to Switzerland feel kind of full circle.
By the time the band hit the stage in Basel, they were tighter than ever. There’s something about seeing them play live—older, wiser (well, maybe), and still unstoppable—that just hits different. Basel got one of those unforgettable Stones nights, loud and raw under the Swiss sky. Because when the Rolling Stones come to town, even the Alps shake a little.
