Chaos, Heat & Rock ‘n’ Roll: The Rolling Stones Boulder 1978 Show

A Blazing Day at Folsom Field

July 16, 1978—what started as a hot summer Sunday in Boulder quickly turned into a rock-fueled frenzy. The event, dubbed “Colorado Sun Day II,” opened with sets by Kansas and Eddie Money before the Rolling Stones took the stage. As temperatures soared beyond 100°F by mid-afternoon, Folsom Field became a sweltering sea of 60,000 fans. Medical teams from the University of Denver Open Clinic were on high alert, treating anywhere from 300 to 1,000 attendees for heat exhaustion, alcohol issues, and even bizarre incidents like burns from flaming tequila.

Pre-Show Panic and Psychedelics

Boulder officials had reason to worry in the lead-up to the event. Memories of the 1975 Fort Collins Stones show—which left the city paralyzed by traffic and chaos—were still fresh. This time, law enforcement braced for an even larger crowd and possible repeat of the madness. They weren’t entirely off base. The Rocky Mountain News reported drugs being passed around like candy, with marijuana and LSD circulating freely. One particularly bold dealer, handing out joints with zero fear of arrest, summed up the day’s wild vibe.

And let’s talk tickets—originally just $12 (about $41-45 in today’s money), but scalpers were cashing in on desperate fans, asking up to $50 a pop. That didn’t stop tens of thousands from packing into the stadium, proving that heat, mayhem, and high prices were no match for the draw of the Stones.

It wasn’t just a concert—it was a full-blown cultural moment, etched into Boulder’s rock history with sweat, smoke, and legendary riffs.
