Tucson, Arizona hosted The Rolling Stones on July 21, 1978, and they brought their explosive energy. One of the highlights of the band’s 1978 US tour was the concert at the Community Center. An additional layer of magic was given to the evening with a special guest appearance by Linda Ronstadt, who performed Tumbling Dice with the band. Thousands of fans attended the show, which was a huge success. Nevertheless, there were allegations of damage and arrests outside the arena due to the commotion caused by the strong demand for tickets. For those fortunate enough to attend, the concert itself was a fantastic experience, despite the initial chaos.

When Tucson Went Stones Crazy in ’78

Back in ’78 Tucson fans went all in to catch The Rolling Stones live — thousands camped out overnight, hoping to score a $10 ticket. The crowd got so wild that ticket sales started two hours early and still, all 8,000 tickets vanished in just 45 minutes. Talk about a hot item.

Come showtime, the scene outside was a mix of sweaty, tired, and slightly stoned fans — but mostly peaceful. Meanwhile backstage, the band was living large with a feast of shrimp, ribs, beef tenderloin, chicken, and, of course, champagne. At one point, Mick Jagger wandered out and casually signed a few tickets before the venue filled up.

Etta James kicked things off and got her due respect, but let’s be honest — the crowd came for the Stones. When the lights dropped and the band hit the stage, the place exploded. Tucson had officially gone full rock ‘n’ roll.
