The Rolling Stones Shake Wellington on the A Bigger Bang Tour
On April 18, 2006, The Rolling Stones brought their A Bigger Bang tour to Wellington’s Westpac Stadium (Sky Stadium today), delivering a powerhouse performance that left fans in awe. It was the band’s second-ever show in New Zealand’s capital, and their energy proved they were still the kings of rock and roll. The stadium, packed with over 35,000 fans, pulsed with excitement as Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood, and Charlie Watts took the stage under clear autumn skies.
The setlist was a fiery mix of classics and new material, opening with Jumpin’ Jack Flash and rolling through hits like Start Me Up, Tumbling Dice and Brown Sugar. Newer tracks from A Bigger Bang like Rough Justice were received with surprising enthusiasm. Jagger effortlessly worked the stage, even throwing in some local references that delighted the crowd, while Richards delivered his always heartfelt two-song during his spotlight moment.
A Night to Remember at Westpac Stadium
The show featured a moving stage that brought the band closer to the audience in the middle of the stadium, creating an intimate vibe despite the massive venue. Charlie Watts’ steady drumming anchored the chaos, and Ronnie and Keith lit up the night with guitar interplay that showed decades of chemistry.
The Rolling Stones’ 2006 Wellington concert wasn’t just a rock show—it was a cultural moment. For many fans, it was their first (and maybe only) chance to see the legendary group live. As fireworks exploded during the final notes of Satisfaction it was clear that the Stones had once again lived up to their legacy.
